Refuse & Reuse

A commissioned, sustainability-focused merchandise system featuring original illustrations across reusable everyday products designed to promote environmental awareness and reduce plastic waste.

I created the organization’s original illustration system and merchandise visuals, which were used across outreach campaigns, educational programs, fundraising pop-ups, reusable products, social media, and public sustainability events.

Version 2 (Chosen)

ORIGINAL ILLUSTRATION

TOOLS:Pencil Sketch, Procreate & Photoshop

Version 1

DESIGN RATIONALE
The initial direction was developed in response to the client’s request for a wave composition inspired by Katsushika Hokusai’s iconic ocean imagery. Based on that reference, I reworked the structure, whale form, plastic-waste details, and overall silhouette to move the illustration beyond direct inspiration and create a more original campaign visual.

I ultimately selected Version 2 because its circular composition, flexible negative space, and stronger visual mark made it more adaptable across merchandise, packaging, and promotional applications.
